History of Bingo

So many different wagering games have histories that are hard to know or just plain unknown, but bingo is not one of those games at all. Instead, it is clearly known that during the 1400’s, a game began in Italy that was called the clearing of the lots of Italy or in Italian, Lo Giuoco del Lotto d’Italia. This game would capture the hearts and minds of the Italian people and it is still a very powerful tradition in that land, but after it was created, the concept traveled north into France where it would become popular in a French version and spread over into Germany where it was used to teach children a variety of different subjects such as the alphabet, the numerical system, names of animals and the names of plants. This development seems to have been spaced widely from those days and time when it would be re-discovered by a salesman from New York City who went by the name of Edwin Lowe. One day, when Mr. Lowe was traveling through the US state of Georgia, he came across a carnival and decided to investigate. He noticed a large group of people gathered around one of the games so he took a look and saw a game that the carnival people were calling beano. He stayed to watch and saw opportunity. When he got back to New York City, he decided to try and invent a variation of the game so that he could sell the cards to it. This is when he began testing and discovered that New Yorkers loved the game, as well. During one of the tests, someone yelled out bingo instead of beano and the name stuck. They did not know that the word bingo was actually first used in England during during the 1770’s, but it still fit very well.

From this sparking point, bingo would go on to become a very popular way for charities and churches to raise money for a huge variety of different causes. Then it would become a popular game to play for money in bingo halls and in casinos around the country. It would spread to the United Kingdom and there it would become even more popular than it ever had been in the US. This set the stage perfectly for the mid 1990’s when the web first came into prominence. Once this occurred, many sites began to crop up offering various online casino games and online bingo finally got its first start online. This proved to be a very smart move by those site owners because the game was wildly popular by the year 2000. Today, that popularity just keeps building and building with a growing demographic of mostly young adult women enjoying the game on a regular basis. In fact, so many millions of people no play bingo online that it has actually become a billion dollar industry. There are hundreds of bingo sites that one can play in and a wide variety of software packages that make the whole gaming process a lot easier for the players.
