Bingo on Mount Everest Sure to Draw Attention to Game

In a statement of both inspiration and irony, bingo fans are gathering together to play the game atop Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain, in an attempt to take the traditional ‘eyes down’ to a much higher level. At 17,500 feet above sea level, Everest towers above every other mountain on Earth and provides the challenge that a group of hardcore bingo players from the UK are training to take on. The group of two dozen people want to beat the Guinness Book of World Record’s record for the bingo game played at the highest altitude. The rendezvous point will be at Everest’s Base Camp and in order to get there, the players will face a myriad of physical challenges ranging from altitude sickness to dehydration – all things that climbers on Everest can expect to do battle with in order to best the peak. Each of the climbers works for Gala Coral and they are all training in the UK so that they will be able to have the strength and endurance needed to take part in the event.

Gala Coral decided to hold the event in order to raise £100,000 for the Sue Ryder Care charity in their efforts to pull in a total of £1,000,000 for the charity this year. So far, the team has played in the Beetham Tower of Birmingham (520 ft), the Blackpool Tower (540 ft) and The Gherkin tower of London (590 ft).  Vigorous physical training ranging from running to hiking have been supplemented with high speed bingo games to sharpen their mental acuity for the mental capacity drop that occurs at high elevations.
